Kalamazoo

about

I made this song primarily using samples I recorded while visiting my Grandma in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The whole song is detuned because I used my Grandma's piano which she hasn't serviced in some time. I incorporate cello on the chorus, as it was the first instrument I learned to play. I wrote the song about Kalamazoo and my family there, so it's both nostalgic and critical of my roots. The lyrics are mostly impressionistic memories and existential concerns I have with my family legacy.

lyrics

fireworks in the backwoods
22s in the parking lot
ice sheets, frozen pond
swim beneath the great beyond
dark jokes and easy denial
everyones a juror when she’s on trial
generations are drifting by
familiar stories kind crocodile

timewarp on the walls in the retrospective halls
personality ran away from blasphemy
you can smell the bells
hear the movie theater spills
forest camo style
ammo in the grocery aisles

dynamite to clear the road
old growth where the family grows
where roland drowned
alcohol dragged him down
generations drifting by
familiar stories deep denial
we’re living proof
trying to rewrite the rules
